Janské Lázně is one of the most popular spa towns in the country. This is because it is not only an excellent health resort with healing thermal springs, but also one of the best ski resorts in the Czech Republic, the only one located in the Krkonoše mountain range.

Janské Lázně is often called the “gateway to the Krkonoše” by locals. After all, it is located right in the foothills of this huge mountain range, at the foot of the famous Black Mountain. The thermal spa of Janske Lazne and various health resorts are located in the center of the small town of the same name. The resort is located practically on the border with neighboring Poland.

Currently, Janske Lazne has become a famous sports center, one of the best in the Czech Republic, where there is an opportunity to play sports all year round. The ski resort of Janske Lazne is part of a large sports ski complex in the eastern Krkonoše Mountains. The skiing area in the sports region is connected by a common ski pass.

The ski slopes of the sports center are considered one of the longest in the Czech Republic. The main slopes are equipped with snow cannons and are processed by snowmobiles. The resort has trails for both families and extreme skiers. The complex has a fifty-kilometer cross-country trail and a three-kilometer toboggan run.

The mountain air, a beautiful park, the magnificent Krkonoše nature reserve, as well as the beautiful architecture of the resort complement the wonderful impressions of the holiday.

How to get there

The best way to get to Janské Lázně is by car, in the direction of Trutnov and Svoboda nad Upou. There are also regular flights from Černý Most, Ledeč nad Sázavod or Trutnov directly to the center of Janské Lázně, with a subsequent transfer, for example, from Brno, Ostrava or Hradec Králové. You can get to Trutnov by train, and then take local buses. At the same time, the ski buses Janske Lazne – Pec pod Sněžkou run here for free and very often.

The center of Janske Lazne is small, but you will find everything you need there

Climate of the resort

Since the resort is located quite high – 1299 meters above sea level, the climate here is mountainous and quite cool compared to the rest of the Czech Republic. The average temperature in winter is 0 degrees.

The ski season starts here in December and lasts until March.

Slopes and lifts

There are many ski slopes of varying degrees of difficulty, as well as cross-country ski trails, which are regularly maintained during the season. On the slopes and in the surrounding area you will meet not only Czechs, but also Polish or German neighbors. Janske Lazne is located close to the border, so it is an ideal place for people from border regions. Employees on the slopes, in restaurants or hotels mostly speak all these languages.

Černá Hora

The Janske Lazne complex includes 13 ski slopes, a ski run and a toboggan run. The ski runs are located on the southern and southeastern slopes of the neighboring Světla and Černá Hora. Of these, there are black runs 1600 and 2600 m long for extreme skiers, red runs 1100, 1400 and 1800 m long and blue runs from 200 to 600 m long for beginner skiers.

The largest ski resort in the Czech Republic consists of five resorts and 44 km of slopes, united by a single ski pass. Easy and gentle slopes in Černá Dúl or in Svobod nad Upo.

Also try the longest, up to three kilometers, slopes on Černá Hora. From there you can move to Pec pod Sněžkou, where there is a unique Funline slope with sharp turns and an 8-meter tunnel, as well as a giant slalom course.

The largest of the five ski resorts ČERNÁ HORA – PEC. Here you will find a modern 6-seater chairlift (heated chairs and with windproof caps) HOFMANKY EXPRESS, which is the fastest in the Czech Republic.

The resort of Černá hora (Janské Lázně) is popular thanks to the only 8-seater gondola lift in the Czech Republic called ČERNOHORSKÝ EXPRESS. Both lifts have parking lots nearby.

The longest slope is 3 km. On the giant slalom track with timekeeping (MS2) you can measure your speed.

The resort has three playgrounds: the LIVE Formans park, equipped with “magic carpets” and the LIVE park Černá hora with children’s carousels. There are ski schools for beginners SkiResort Live. The ski school office is located near the lower area of the lift. The third area for beginners is the small slopes Sport 1 and 2 on the top of Černá hora near Sokolský Buda.

Černá hora (Janské Lázně) is connected to the Pec pod Sněžkou ski area using SkiTours, and then the SkiTour Express ski bus.

Changes have also been made to the blue main line. Thanks to this, you can reach the Černý-Dul district from the Hofmanky Express stop in 10 minutes.

Enjoy evening skiing on the 1.6 km long Proleta ski slope, the longest illuminated ski slopes in the Czech Republic.

There is one ski pass for the entire ski run in this area. There is a special rate for evening skiing.

ČERNÁ HORA – PEC resort (Jánské Lázně).

The lifts are open from 8.30 to 16.00, then at 17.30. The Hofmanky Express chairlift, Prolez and 7 tow lifts operate, with a capacity of 11 thousand people per hour.

The total length of all ski slopes is more than 17 km. They are located at an altitude of 200 to 2600 meters. The Černá hora and Formanek parks in Janské Lázně are open.

Night skiing in Prozesz from 18:00 to 21:00, free parking in the evening from 17:00 to 22:00 at the central parking lot. Cross-country ski trails are about 50 km long. and tobogganing 3.5 km.

The trails of the Jánske Lázně ski resort are mostly gentle. There are no “black” trails for professionals, but a large number of training areas have been prepared for beginners and children.

The second largest ski resort is PEC (Pec pod Sněžkou), which is connected to the Černá Hora ski resort thanks to SkiTour.

Entertainment and active recreation

The village’s excellent infrastructure is surprising. A large parking lot near the ski lift, a free shuttle bus to the funicular and many hotels with all the amenities allow you to start your skiing day calmly.

The official hotel of the resort Omnia offers not only comfort and coziness, but also a swimming pool, tennis court, sauna and other entertainment, and the restaurant chain Ford Bar allows you to enjoy the mountain scenery from an open terrace. The design of the village’s hotels and restaurants is made in various styles typical of Czech architecture.

The cuisine in the eateries on the mountain is presented with dishes that will not make vacationers waste time waiting for cooking. Fried sausages and potatoes, pizza, hot sandwiches together with warming mulled wine or beer allow you to quickly satisfy your hunger.

In winter, Janske Lazne is an ideal paradise for skiers and tourists. Snow usually appears here around November and lasts until about March. There is a large complex of ski slopes, lifts and cable cars. And if you are not a fan of winter sports, there are also many activities for you here, so you will definitely not be bored!

And if you want to take a day off from skiing, I recommend visiting the Treetop Trail. This is a sequence from the so-called. series of trails in the clouds. It is a tall wooden tower, which at its highest point reaches a height of 45 m, that is, treetops or even higher. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings and at the same time learn something about Czech forests, trees and nature through interactive questions. For children there are several “parking lots” with quizzes. In summer you can go down a long hill, in winter you only have to walk.

In addition to skiing, the resort also offers cycling one of the many bike trails, play mini golf and swim in the pool.

Also, do not miss the opportunity to visit local places. First of all, go to the Krkonoše National Park, which is located nearby and is a nature reserve protected by the state.

If you like painting, then be sure to go to Gostiny – this is a former Franciscan church, which today houses an exhibition of classical art.

There are many hotels and restaurants in the city center, so everyone will choose. We recommend the restaurant right at the exit from the Treetop Walk, where you will find both Czech and international cuisine at reasonable prices.

In addition, there is a very beautiful cafe from the times of the First Republic in the center (not far from the bus station). If you plan to stay in Janské Lázně for more than 2 days, book a hotel in advance. In season, the best hotels near the ski slopes and in the city center are immediately booked.
