The Borovets ski resort is located on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains among ancient pine forests at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, at the foot of Mount Musala (2,925 m), which is the highest peak in the Balkans.

Founded in 1896 as the summer residence of the royal family, Borovets is currently a modern high-class ski resort in Bulgaria with fashionable hotel complexes, a variety of entertainment and excellent opportunities for winter sports such as alpine skiing, snowboarding, slalom, biathlon and ski jumping.

Every year, international competitions are held here, such as the European Cup stage in alpine disciplines (giant slalom and slalom). The resort area is also famous for its healing mineral springs.

Location of the resort

Located just 70 km south of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, at an altitude of 1 km 300 meters, Borovets ski resort has gained fame not only as a wonderful place for winter recreation, but also as a health resort.

The small resort town of Borovets is located next to the Musala mountain range, which is the highest in the Balkans – 2 km 925 meters above sea level.

Thanks to the clean mountain air, warm winters and mild summers, many people come to the resort all year round not only to relax, but also to cure bronchial asthma, nervous system disorders and other diseases.

For this purpose, several specialized sanatoriums and rest homes have been opened at the resort.

Reasons for the popularity of the resort

But in recent years, Borovets, as a ski resort, has begun to gain more and more popularity, as various competitions are held here every year, not only in alpine skiing, but also in other winter sports, ranging from regional to national and international competitions.

The skiing season begins in early December and ends in early April, but depending on the weather, it can be extended until early May.

How to get to the resort

Bulgaria is not such a big country to get lost in, especially since the resort is located not far from its capital.

But still, there are some points in this matter that you need to know.

If you are traveling by car, then there are no problems at all. It is 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from Sofia and you are there.

9.5 km from Borovets there is a town of Samokov, to which minibuses leave from Sofia very often. It takes about 10 minutes to drive from Sofia to Samokov.

From Samokov to the Borovets ski resort there are minibuses every 15 minutes. Just 10 minutes on the road and you are at the resort.

Another route, via Plovdiv

From Plovdiv by car or bus, you can get to Borovets along one route. The distance between the settlements is 129 km, the travel time is one and a half hours.

In general, there are several options for getting to the Borovets resort, the most convenient of course is via Sofia. But it all depends on where you are going to go on a ski tour to Bulgaria.

Skiing areas

The resort has three main skiing areas.

Markudžik

The highest skiing area is located at altitudes from 2 km 208 meters to 2 km 560 meters (the highest point in the resort) above sea level and is called Markudžik.

The four most difficult slopes in the resort for intermediate athletes are equipped here. The slopes here are “blue” (second in difficulty after the easiest) and “red” (quite difficult to descend).

Yastrebets

Next, going beyond the heights (1300-2369 m), is the Yastrebets skiing area – an ideal place for confident skiers. According to the trail scheme, one “black” (for experts) and three “red” (interesting and quite difficult) slopes are offered.

Sitnyakovo-Martynova Baraki

And the last skiing area is Sitnyakovo-Martynova Baraki, where the lowest point is located at an altitude of 1 km 300 m (the height of the resort), the highest point is 1 km 790 meters above sea level, made for beginners and for well-trained skiers. It has sections for slalom. There are seven difficult and one intermediate track.

The total height difference is 1 km 193 meters.

The total length of prepared tracks is about 60 km. In addition to these kilometers, you can safely add 18 km of biathlon trails.

The longest trail is 12 kilometers long.

The Borovets ski resort is equipped with 16 lifts, which, in total, have a throughput of about 12,000 people per hour. There are practically no queues here.

Since this region has a specific climate, there may sometimes be no snow on the trails in winter. Therefore, the resort has snow cannons that ensure constant snow on the trails.

There are illuminated trails, so you can ski here until late in the evening.

A 20-kilometer trail has been created for cross-country skiing (the gondola lift area). Extreme sports enthusiasts will be able to use two ski jumps with a height of 75 and 50 meters.

Eighteen trails with a length of 40 kilometers have been created for snowboarders in Borovets. Experts will like the 12-meter jumping table. There are areas for children who are involved in snowboarding. Beginners will love the 12-kilometer Musalenska p’teka trail.

The ski resort offers guests 35 kilometers of cross-country trails that meet world standards for safety and organization. There are also trails for biathletes for training and competitions.

For those who are skiing for the first time, there is a ski school at the Borovets ski resort, where you will be met by 200 highly qualified specialists, most of whom speak different languages.

Lifts and ski pass prices

The Borovets ski resort is equipped with lifts of various types:

one gondola – length of almost five kilometers, travel time – 20 minutes;
three four-seater chairlifts – “Sitnyakovo Express”, “Yastrebets Express”, “Markudzhik 2” and “Martynova Baraki”;
twelve tow lifts – “Sitnyakovo”, “Markudzhik 0”, “Markudzhik 1”, “Markudzhik 3”, “Rila”, “Iglika” and “Rotata”.

There are 16 of them in total plus several portable mini-lifts. Any of the lifts starts work with transportation at 9 am and ends at 4:30 pm. For the evening run, a separate lift operates from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

There are areas for children who are involved in snowboarding.

Cost of ski passes:

one-day – adult 30 euros, child (age 8 – 12) 18 euros;
two-day – adult 55 euros, child 33 euros;
six-day – adult 140 euros, child 95 euros;
thirteen-day – adult 275 euros, child 95 euros.

Skiers can purchase a half-day ski pass, its cost will be approximately 15 euros. For an unlimited number of lifts per week, the client is charged 160 euros.

A ski pass plus ski, pole and boot rental for adults will cost 210 euros for six days and 400 euros for thirteen days. For children, the prices are 150 and 240 euros, respectively.

An extended package that includes ski equipment rental, instructor lessons, a ski evening and a lift pass will cost adult resort guests 220 euros for six days and 430 euros for thirteen days. Children will have to pay 155 and 260 euros for six or thirteen days of rest.

Other types of recreation

Since the Borovets resort is open to visitors all year round and international and regional competitions and sporting events are constantly held here, the infrastructure in this region is well developed.

The resort has a fitness center, an indoor swimming pool, a bowling club, and there is an opportunity to go for a walk around local attractions on a sled or even to see all of nature from a bird’s eye view, taking a helicopter tour.

And there are simply too many different bars, cafes, and restaurants, both with local and international cuisine, to list.
