Bansko rightfully bears the title of the ski pearl of Bulgaria. It is one of the largest resort towns in the country, and is also considered the best in terms of technical equipment and location. It is located in the southwest, between Sofia (distance – 160 km) and Plovdiv (distance – 110 km), in a valley at the foot of the Pirin Mountains.

The city itself is located 936 meters above sea level. And the height of the mountains in this area reaches 2560 meters. Nearby is one of the largest peaks in Bulgaria – Mount Pirin, whose highest peak is 2915 m high. The resort is located on the territory of the National Nature Park, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

By the way, vacationing in Bansko is not only pleasant, but also profitable – the resort has the status of the most budget ski resort in the world, a title it received in 2014.

History of the Bansko resort

Bansko is an ancient city, the history of which dates back several hundred years. The first settlements, as indicated in historical documents, were created here in the 9th-10th centuries AD. The period of prosperity falls on the 18th century, when Bansko turned into a large village. Its residents were engaged in various types of crafts and trade. Goods went all the way to the Aegean Sea.

However, Bansko was not only a trade center, but also a cultural center. Gifted artists and true masters of woodworking lived here. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they created many works of art to decorate local churches and the Rila Monastery, as well as the monasteries of Mount Athos, Serbia and Macedonia.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Bansko was part of the Ottoman Empire. It gained independence only in 1912, after which it became part of the state of Bulgaria. A ski resort on the territory of the city was created in the 80s of the last century.

Weather in Bansko

The daytime temperature in the city is stable during the winter – about 2-3 ° C. In the mountains it is usually colder – average temperatures vary from -4 ° to -7 ° C, but can reach -15 ° C. Bansko is known for the longest ski season in Bulgaria, which begins in mid-December and ends only by mid-April. This area also experiences heavy snowfall, so the resort has the highest snow cover in the country – up to 2 meters. If there is a low-snow season, the situation is corrected with the help of powerful snow cannons.

How to get there

The distance from Sofia International Airport to Bansko is 160 kilometers, from Plovdiv Airport – 170 kilometers. You can get there by rented car, ordering a transfer at a hotel or apartment, or by public transport – from the Sofia bus station. Travel time by bus is about 3 hours, the average ticket price is 15 leva, buses depart to / from Bansko to Sofia from the morning until about 16.45 (it is better to check the schedule on site).

Bansko trails and lifts

There are about 20 trails in Bansko, with a total length of 14 km. The orientation of the slopes is mainly northern, the highest altitude at the start of the descent is 2500 meters. The length of the longest trail is 2.6 km. Skiers can enjoy both professional “red”, “black” and “orange” slopes, as well as “blue” trails for guests with little skiing experience. The resort also has cross-country skiing trails up to 8 km long.

There are 13 lifts in Bansko: Todorka, Balkaniada, Binderitsa, Plateau North and others. Three of them are designed for children. The lifting equipment has different capacities and designs. Cabins, chairlifts, tow and tow (manual) lifts with a capacity of one to eight people are available.

Even if you do not know how to ski well, you can take training right at the resort – professional instructors work in Bansko. In addition, snowboarding lessons are held. Children can go on vacation with you – special lifts and ski slopes are aimed at them, and there is also a ski kindergarten.

For beginner skiers and snowboarders, the Bansko, Shiligarnika, Todorka and Stara Pistia slopes are the most suitable, while more experienced winter sports enthusiasts will be able to hone their skills on the Tomba, Black Tomb, Banderitsa and Balkaniad slopes. Skilled skiers and snowboarders have the opportunity to take the chairlift to the Plateau area, and hone their skills by descending the Plateau-North and Plateau-South slopes to the Plateau-South area. A distinctive feature of Bansko compared to other Bulgaria’s ski resorts is that it is here that you can try your hand at downhill skiing on this virgin land covered with loose snow and discover new unexplored places.

Children will not be bored at the Bansko ski resort either, as they will be able to spend time with experienced teachers and animators in the Junior Club kindergarten, and older children can take their first steps in skiing accompanied by experienced instructors.

In the Bansko ski resort everyone will find something for themselves. Cross-country skiers will find 2 and 4 km long cross-country ski trails located in the “Binderyshka Polyana” area.

Winter sports enthusiasts will be able to diversify their vacation in the “fan park”, which is located in the “Plato” area. This park is equipped with ski jumps and obstacles, on which experienced skiers and snowboarders can practice jumps and tricks.

Trails and features of the skiing areas

Bansko is located in a mountain valley at the foot of the Pirin Range. The highest point of the mountain system is Mount Vihren, which is clearly visible from the balconies of Bansko hotels.

The skiing takes place high in the mountains, where the only branch of the gondola cable car and a car serpentine for those who arrived in their car and do not want to stand in line for the cable car.

In high season, there are queues on the cable car and on the track leading to the upper station. Before you break through the bottleneck of the cable car to the upper slopes and tracks, you can stand for an hour waiting for a free cabin to the top. If you go up by car, there are two small parking lots near the chairlifts.

Further from the upper station of the gondola lift, skiers are distributed to different skiing areas by two chairlifts. They lead to the red and black tracks, which are located above the gondola lift.

Beginners who have skied for the first time, as a rule, do not go up and go down the blue slopes to the end station of the gondola. Here are blue gentle slopes, which are comfortable for beginners and those who ski with small children. There is also a ski school here – on the easiest training slope.

The red and black slopes are located on the slopes of Mount Todorka – the upper station at an altitude of 2600 m, and one slope descends from Mount Vihren. Some of the most interesting slopes are Shiligarnika and Banderitsa.

In total, Bansko has 70 km of slopes of varying difficulty and 13 lifts. There is not much space to ski in a variety of ways all week, but for beginners it is convenient to gradually move from easy to difficult slopes.

In Bansko you can pay for each climb or buy a ski pass – for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13.

A six-day ski pass costs 200 Euros for adults, 100 Euros for children (2020 prices).

Ski equipment rental for those who do not have their own skis or boards. A large rental point is located near the lower station of the gondola lift. It is also convenient to leave your boots and skis (snowboards) here every evening for storage and drying.

Bansko is a fairly young and rapidly developing ski resort, which is just over 15 years old. In this regard, almost all accommodation facilities here meet modern standards, there are no outdated residential structures of the socialist period, typical of many cities in Bulgaria. Bulgarian stone houses stylized as antiques, chalets, apartment complexes, luxurious 5* and 4* hotels with spas, saunas and swimming pools, solid private apartments – all this can be found in Bansko, depending on your budget.

Bansko has a huge selection of hotels and most of them are inexpensive – within 30-40 Euros per day for double occupancy. For the New Year holidays, the price starts from 50 Euros per night, but by Christmas prices drop.
