Bulgaria is not only a country of wonderful sun and gentle Black Sea, but also an excellent ski resort. Moreover, the oldest existing point of attraction of “ski power” in Bulgaria – the famous resort of Borovets – has existed since 1896. True, then only members of the royal family rested there, but today Borovets, and other various ski resorts in Bulgaria are available to many lovers of this sport and winter recreation.

Compared to other resorts in Europe, prices here are much lower, both for hotels and for ski passes, equipment rental and food. There is a huge selection of ski slopes, ranging from the simplest to the “advanced”, there is practically no language barrier, and Bulgarians are very happy to welcome guests from different countries, which is an important factor.

Yes, and the peculiarities of the climate of this country allow you to ski here perfectly, starting from December for 4-4.5 months. Winters here are quite mild, with temperatures from -6 to +5 degrees, a stable snow cover of up to 2 meters is formed on the slopes of the Balkan Mountains, bad weather and any cataclysms associated with strong winds and snowstorms are very rare, the sun shines very often.

So the conditions for skiing here are close to ideal, and the numerous ski slopes of Bulgaria, which we will talk about later, simply attract skiers with their accessibility and excellent conditions.

The main problem of the resort is the lack of an airport. Currently, an international airport is being built near the town of Gotse Delchev, which is 50 km. from Bansko and this will be a real breakthrough. In the meantime, skiers get to the Bansko resort via Sofia.

The total length of the slopes is about 75 km.

Features of the Bansko resort

From the town of Bansko itself, there is only one lift with 8 cabins that takes you to the mountain. It is called “kabinki lift” in Bulgarian and in the morning there is a significant queue. Therefore, it is worth getting here with the first ski bus or living near the lift to be at the lift by 7.30 am. To date, the second lift has not been built.

The upper point of the “kabinki lift” lift is the Bunderishka meadow. On the mountain itself, the initial tension from the queue evaporates – the Pirin mountain range immediately conquers with its beauty and well-groomed slopes. In the ski area there are a dozen chairlifts and 60 km. of various slopes. For a week of skiing, this is usually enough to not get bored.

The undoubted advantages include the variety of slopes, good steepness of the slopes, which is facilitated by the steep difference in altitude. In addition, the old town of Bansko is very beautiful and there is a huge offer of food and accommodation.

Ski slopes for skiing in the Borovets resort

In a word, the slopes for skiing in Borovets can be described as relaxed skiing for pleasure, sports records are not set here, they go to Bansko for this. Even the “black” slopes in Borovets are more like red ones.

There are a lot of green slopes for beginners or for young children. The condition of all slopes is perfect, snowmobiles work every day, most slopes are equipped with snow cannons.

Almost all lifts are modern chairlifts, one gondola lift. There is a snow park and other new-fangled entertainment, there is also night skiing.

It is better to stay near the lifts, in the town of Borovets itself. The road to the lifts is narrow, there are few parking lots – the option of getting there by car is not possible. Chepelare ski resort

This resort is a satellite of Pamporovo, and it is located only 10 kilometers from it. Let’s talk about Chepelare briefly, since it is similar to Pamporovo, even the ski pass is shared with it. Chepelare is located a little further north and is more suitable for beginners. Skiing here is from December to mid-April, the snow cover is up to one and a half meters high.

Location

To Plovdiv – 72 kilometers, to Sofia – 222 kilometers, the scheme and fare are similar to Pamporovo.

Trails

There is only one black trail here, so advanced skiers will not be interested. But there are 2 green, 4 blue and 5 red trails with a total length of 12 kilometers. There are 2 chairlifts and 2 tow lifts, there are opportunities for snowboarding.

Prices

The prices for ski passes are 30 leva / day, otherwise similar to Pamporovo, and in general this is a very quiet resort, all life in which is bustling in the neighborhood in the more famous Pamporovo. We only note that housing prices here are cheaper, and you can find a comfortable hotel with “stars” from 50 leva, and if without stars, then even cheaper.

Vitosha Ski Resort

Vitosha is a resort located in the immediate vicinity of Sofia, and that says it all. It is more of a “weekend” ski resort, since residents of the capital really like to spend time here. But it has other distinctive features, the main one of which is that it is the highest mountain resort in Bulgaria.

Mount Cherni Vryh gives Vitosha great picturesqueness, but you need to understand that on weekends there are long queues for the gondola lift. And in general, this resort is best combined with a visit to Sofia, and not as an independent trip. Especially since people ski here from mid-December to the end of April.

Location

It is only 10 kilometers to Sofia, and it is better to get to Vitosha by regular buses 107, 64 and 66, and it will cost 3-4 leva. It takes only half an hour to get here, and then you can climb to a height of 1800 meters on a comfortable lift for 15 leva. So you can look here from Sofia and just go on an excursion.

Trails

Map of the Vitosha ski resort trails

There are 13 trails with a total length of 29 kilometers. The proximity of the capital also ensured the diversity of these trails, because there are many skiers with different skills in Sofia. There are 7 blue, 4 red trails and 3 more – for those who like to tickle their nerves.

There is a cross-country trail, 9 lifts, and a gondola lift is often used for sightseeing purposes.

Prices

The prices are low, they are primarily aimed at Bulgarians, not foreigners, so they are even lower than at ski resorts further from Sofia. A ski pass here costs 36 leva per adult per day, and even less for a child – 10.3 leva.

There is also equipment rental, and it is also cheaper, for about 20-22 leva per day you can take the whole set. It is also important that there are many restaurants where you can eat very tasty, because Bulgarians know a lot about food.

Ski Resort Panichishte

The resort of Panichishte is located in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria, and this picturesque place is most suitable for beginner skiers. Its features include the fact that the Sapareva Banya balneological resort is located nearby, as well as the only geyser in Bulgaria. It is not far from Sofia, although getting there from there is quite inconvenient.

Location

80 kilometers from Sofia can be covered by bus in about an hour and a half, and the road to the city of Dupnitsa will cost only 6 leva. Then you can take a minibus for 3 leva to Sapareva Banya, and from there by taxi 10 kilometers (approximately 15-20 leva), and you are there. You can also take a taxi from Sofia, but it will be about 100 leva.

Tracks

This modest ski resort has only five blue runs, but there is one wonderful “highlight”. This is a toboggan run with amazing bends 1100 meters long, which will please everyone – from small to large. Each ski run has a lift, and there is also a cross-country track 5 kilometers long.

The longest track is “Rila Lakes” with a length of 950 meters, the rest – 300-500 meters each. There is a wonderful children’s track “Agena”. The height above sea level of this very cozy and somehow “homely” resort is 1400 meters.

Prices

Since there are few tracks here, they are small and simple, the ski pass costs mere kopecks or stotinki, if we speak in the Bulgarian manner. For adults and children, its cost is only 10 leva.

Next to the longest track of the resort there is an equipment rental, where you can take the entire set for 20 leva.

Ski resort Malyovitsa

This resort is located not far from Borovets, and close to the capital of the country, although getting here is not very convenient. In general, people ski here from December to mid-April, and this is a fairly secluded place located in the picturesque mountains. The main mountaineering center of Bulgaria is also located here, and this is a feature of this ski and mountaineering resort.

Location

Malyovitsa is only 40 kilometers from Borovets, and 90 km from Sofia. You will have to get here “by transfers”: first by bus to Samokov or the village of Govedartsi (but to this village, located 13 km from the resort, the bus runs once a day), and then by taxi, which will cost about 30-40 leva.

You can also get there by taxi from the capital, but it will cost 100-120 leva. But the location of the Malyovitsa resort is interesting because the famous Rila Monastery is nearby, which is a must-see.

Trails

The selection of trails is quite modest: there are four trails, one for beginners, two for the average category, one black with the name “Uleya” 1200 meters long, but it is extreme only in its upper part, and below it clearly “turns red”. Their length is 4 kilometers, there are 5 lifts to serve customers. The height of the resort is around 1700 meters above sea level.

Prices

A ski pass costs 25 leva in Malyovitsa, and there are no discounts for children. But there is an opportunity to learn at the oldest ski school in Bulgaria, which began operating in the 1950s. It is named after Hristo Prodanov, a Bulgarian climber who conquered Everest.

There are ski lockers on the slopes, where you can rent a full set of ski equipment for 20 leva.

Uzana Ski Resort

This is the most “humorous” resort in Bulgaria, but not in terms of the quality of service or slopes, but because it is located 22 km from the “capital of humor” Gabrovo.
